How did Wood & Space come to be?
It didn't start as a commercial enterprise at all. When my first daughter was born she became infatuated with what she called "Garden 'ouses" - that's playhouse to you and I. It seemed only right that she should have one of these "Garden 'ouses" of her own for her second birthday (by then she had been joined by her sister). But the ones we could afford, they didn't want, and the ones she wanted, we couldn't afford. So my Dad and I decided to build them one from scratch. It received plenty of positive comments from children and adults alike, so we made one for them at their grandparents house, and here we are today... - making playhouses and "posh sheds" to a high standard at more affordable prices. What are the benefits of buying from Wood & Space? First of all, we do this because we enjoy it and strive to supply precisely what you want. We also do what we say we will. All our buildings really are built to last, I can't stress that enough, carefully made by hand, to order, here in our Devon workshop. Low overheads mean excellent value for money, quality is not compromised. We don't build hundreds of buildings a year, so we give you personal attention throughout the process. What does bespoke mean? Bespoke to us means "as you want it', every one of our sheds has been different, you are not constrained by size, colour, window style, window position or so on. A lot of our sheds are similar, but with tweaks here and there, some are completely different. We make whatever you want, even if you don't see it on our website. It's an easy process. How to order? First step is to make contact, we then chat about sheds for as long as you can stand it, once we have an idea of what you might like we prepare sketches, prices and send relevant examples of previous work. Should you wish to proceed, we give you a delivery date and take a small holding deposit. Once we start the build we take a second payment, and a few weeks later a shed will arrive at a mutually convenient time. Once you are happy with the shed in your garden, you pay the outstanding amount. What if I don't know where to start? We are here to help. How much will it cost? Our posh shed page gives some indicative prices, these include a corrugated roof, painted elevations where required, everything you need to have a lovely shed. You can upgrade to cedar or synthetic slate for a few hundred more if that's your preference. Many of the sheds shown on our website were less than £3,000 including delivery and assembly. The larger garden sheds and buildings are on a case by case basis. |
What will my posh shed be made of? It will be tough, you can be sure of that. All the timber is from sustainable sources, of the best quality and pressure treated to ensure the longevity of your building. We do not scrimp. Floor Minimum 2x2 pressure treated bearers supporting 25mm x 200mm thick boards - very tough and rot resistant. If the shed is for a particularly wet environment, particularly on a concrete base, we fit recycled plastic bearers, the ultimate defence against decay. Framing 2x2 or 4x2 frames for walls with 4x4 solid posts to corners, an upright every c.300 - 350mm. Cladding Shiplap or tongue and groove, 19mm Featheridge cladding, C16 graded, 200mm x 38mm Cedar shingle or corrugated metal upon request. Lining optional Roof Exterior grade plywood supporting Canadian cedar shingles or synthetic roof slates, on roofing baton + membrane, fixed with stainless steel nails. Galvanised 0.7mm corrugated metal roof sheets or plastic coated coloured 0.7mm corrugated metal roof sheets cut to length by the manufacturer. Corten "rusty corrugated" for a real statement building Roof line 4x2 fascia and barge boards, really strong, good looking and easy to fix guttering to, or hang off! Door Ledge and brace, 4x2 frame with vertical tongue and groove - non rust exterior screws, high quality gate lock for security and ease of use, bearing hinges. All of this heavy timber means your shed will not lean, the door will not come apart and the roof will not sag, even if you sit in the middle of it to gaze at the stars - properly well built. Delivery and installation - important! We deliver and assemble nationwide, we leave your new garden building ready to move into. We will give you a delivery price based on your location. It is imperative that you provide a flat, solid base of the correct size. We can deliver to most places, but we ask that you let us know of any obstacles such as height restrictions or steps to ensure we can work around them. If we need to come through your house, that's not an issue, but we need to know this before we quote. |
